2 killed Louisiana crash; drunk driving suspected

Two people were killed in a head-on car crash on LA Highway 447 in Livingston Parish on Dec. 4. The accident happened near Drakeford McMorris Road at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Louisiana State Police said a 50-year-old Jackson man was driving his 1994 GMC pickup truck northbound on Highway 447 when he entered a curve and crossed the centerline, colliding with a southbound 2006 Lincoln Towncar. Both the GMC driver and the Towncar driver, a 76-year-old Denham Springs man, died at the scene of the crash. Neither man was wearing a safety belt.

Police said the GMC driver might have been impaired. Toxicology samples from both decedents were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for testing.

When an impaired driver kills someone in a car crash, his or her family might be unsure of how to deal with the expenses stemming from the wreck. In that event, the decedent's family could file a civil wrongful death lawsuit against the impaired driver. If the liable individual is also killed in the accident, the victim's family may seek damages from the at-fault motorist's estate.

Those who have lost a loved one to a drunk driver may wish to hire an attorney to represent their interests in court. A lawyer could establish an impaired driver's liability for a car accident by examining police reports, toxicology tests, crash reconstruction results and witness testimony. A civil lawsuit could bring a victim's family financial compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, lost inheritance and loss of companionship.
