Lightning strike leads to fatal car accident

On May 15, a couple in Louisiana was killed in a car accident after a vehicle ahead of them was struck by lightning. The fatal accident took place in Evangeline Parish and involved three cars that were all traveling northbound on Interstate 49. Although investigators do not believe that impairment was a factor, toxicology samples were taken from all of the drivers after the accident.

Louisiana State Police Troopers began investigating the fatal car crash just after 1 p.m. Investigators learned that a 2013 Chrysler 200 driven by a 49-year-old man had become disabled after the vehicle was struck by lightning. Afterwards, a 24-year-old man driving a 2010 International Wrecker truck had to come to an abrupt stop to avoid hitting the Chrysler from behind. Next, a 22-year-old man driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado hit the wrecker truck from behind.

The driver of the Silverado was declared dead at the crash scene, and his 24-year-old female passenger was later declared dead at Opelousas General Hospital. A 12-month-old child who was also in the car suffered minor injuries. The driver of the wrecker truck was uninjured, but all four occupants of the Chrysler sustained minor injuries. They were taken to Bunkie General Hospital for treatment.

A person who has been injured in this type of accident may want to speak with a lawyer to determine the remedies that may be available. A review of the accident investigation report and eyewitness testimony can often yield evidence that can be used in a personal injury lawsuit to establish a finding of negligence on the part of the responsible party.
