Trends regarding bus and large truck crashes in Louisiana

People in Louisiana may be interested to learn about what was revealed regarding large truck and bus wrecks in a study conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration covering accidents occurring in 2012. While some of the numbers demonstrated improvement over prior years, others clearly indicate the degree of real risk posed by such accidents.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 3,802 large trucks were involved in fatal collisions in 2012, which was a 5 percent increase over 2011. Despite the increase, it was encouraging to note that the number still represented a 17 percent decrease over the prior 10-year period. Similarly, the number of large trucks involved in accidents causing injuries increased by 22 percent from the numbers of 2011, increasing from 63,000 to 77,000.

Fatal bus crashes increased from 245 involved buses in 2011 to 251 involved buses in 2012, an increase of 2 percent. Correspondingly, the number of bus miles traveled for the year increased by 6.9 percent, while those for truck miles traveled increased by 0.3 percent.

Accidents involving a commercial vehicle driver driving either a large truck or a bus can be especially dangerous, due to the sheer weight and size of these large vehicles. When such a driver is negligent and causes an accident that either injures or kills others, both the driver and the company for which they work may be held to be civilly liable through lawsuits. These often catastrophic accidents can be devastating to both the injured victims and their families, often leaving them with overwhelming economic losses and permanent disabilities. Through a lawsuit, victims and families may be able to recover damages designed to compensate them for both their economic and noneconomic losses. A personal injury attorney may be of assistance in preparing and filing the required complaint.
