Impact of the International Roadcheck 2015

A substantial number of people in Louisiana may be affected by inspections made by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance in June. The results of the inspection blitz, International Roadcheck 2015, are included in a report that was released on Sept. 28. The three-day event involved surprise roadside inspections for nearly 70,000 trucks and buses. The purpose of the checks was to remind carriers about properly securing loads and enforcing existing regulations. Over 2,430 violations were related to load securement.

Nearly 45,000 trucks underwent a Level 1 inspection during the blitz, and more than 20 percent were revealed to have out-of-service violations. In addition, 3.6 percent of the drivers were determined to have committed out-of-service violations. Approximately 46 percent of the driver violations involved hours of service.

More than 27 percent of the vehicles that were inspected during International Roadside 2015 were sanctioned for violations concerning the brake system, the leading vehicle infraction cited by the CVSA. Over 15 percent of the out-of-service violations were attributed to brake adjustment violations. However, the CVSA claims that the Level 1 out-of-service violations given to vehicles and drivers in 2015 was actually the lowest rate since it began recording the data in 1991.

Truck accidents can result in catastrophic injuries to those who are involved, in large part due to the sheer size and weight of these commercial vehicles compared to passenger cars. Injured victims are often forced to incur high medical expenses and to miss work for extended periods of time. In cases where the accident was due to the negligence of another party, such as improper maintenance or truck driver fatigue, a personal injury attorney might be of assistance in seeking compensation for the victim from the at-fault party.
