14 cars involved in forklift arm hit-and-run accident

According to investigators with the Louisiana State Police Troop C, a hit-and-run accident resulted in damages to a total of 14 vehicles. The incident occurred on Feb. 18 around 3:30 p.m.on LA 20 on the Schriever overpass.

Reportedly, a forklift arm was lying in the right-hand lane of the highway. Authorities said they believe it fell off a forklift while it was being transported. That unknown driver didn't stop, leaving the arm in the road. Four vehicles hit the forklift arm and then each other. Another 10 cars also struck the arm.

Troopers reported that two people suffered minor injuries in the accident. Law enforcement authorities have asked that anyone with information about the accident contact them. The Louisiana State Police also reminded drivers that they are responsible for making certain anything they are transporting is secured as well as for anything that might fall on the road.

A negligent party who flees the scene of an accident may face both criminal and civil proceedings. The burden of proof for the prosecutor in a criminal action is higher than it is for a plaintiff in a personal injury lawsuit, and so a plaintiff can prevail even if the defendant is found to be not guilty or if criminal charges are not even filed. Damages that could be sought in a civil proceeding filed with the assistance of an attorney could include the costs of property repair, medical expenses, lost wages and other applicable amounts. People may also seek coverage from their own insurance companies if the driver is not located.
