Police seeking information after deadly hit-and-run accident

The case of a fatally injured bicyclist near Orleans Parish may be familiar to some New Orleans residents. The ABC affiliate WGNO has reported the story as a hit-and-run accident with a request for witnesses. The man was found deceased on the side of the road, and no identification had been made at the time of the report.

Louisiana police officer killed by drunk driver

Authorities have reported that the motorist who stuck and fatally injured a 32-year-old New Orleans Police Department officer during the early morning hours of June 5 may have been intoxicated. The officer succumbed to her injuries on June 7. A warrant for the arrest of the 33-year-old alleged drunk driver was issued on June 6. The NOPD announced at that time that the man would be charged and taken into custody after being released from a hospital.

Louisiana law enforcement praised for DWI arrest rate

A study of drunk driving laws around the country and the impact that they are having could raise some interesting questions in Louisiana. The research, which referenced federal accident and law enforcement data and was released by the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, reveals that while police in Louisiana make a high number of DWI arrests, the costs associated with each drunk driving death in the Pelican State are among the highest in the U.S.

Traffic fatalities show incease nationwide

Louisiana motorists may be part of the reason why traffic fatalities rose for the first six months of 2015. The National Safety Council says nationwide traffic fatalities were up 14 percent over the same time period in 2014. Traffic fatalities in Louisiana were up, with 330 people dying on the state's roads between January and June 2015 compared to 275 in the first six months of 2014.

Summer safety for teen drivers

Teen drivers in Louisiana and throughout the country are more likely to be involved in motor vehicle accidents than any other age group. Furthermore, most people who are injured or killed in a crash that involves a teen driver are not the motorist. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, in 2013, more than 370,000 injuries and over 2,900 deaths were in crashes involving a teen driver.
