Police seeking information after deadly hit-and-run accident

The case of a fatally injured bicyclist near Orleans Parish may be familiar to some New Orleans residents. The ABC affiliate WGNO has reported the story as a hit-and-run accident with a request for witnesses. The man was found deceased on the side of the road, and no identification had been made at the time of the report.

The fatal hit-and-run accident occurred sometime prior to 2 a.m. on June 15 when police found the body of the victim on Earhart Expressway. The accident investigation has revealed that the bicyclist was hit by two separate vehicles. There was no determination at the time of the report on whether the victim died prior to the second accident.

The investigation may rely on witnesses, but police have offered two clues. They believe a Toyota car was involved in the accident and that both vehicles likely sustained damage to the front end. The case is being handled by the Louisiana State Police.

In cases where a negligent party fled the scene of a fatal accident, the surviving family members of the deceased victims may have to wait a long time to obtain closure. In the interim, they may be facing significant financial consequences while having to deal with the grief attendant to the sudden loss of a loved one. The costs of a funeral and burial must be met, and in many cases the contributions to household expenses that the decedent had been making must somehow be replaced. When the motorist is found, a personal injury attorney can often assist the survivors in filing a wrongful death lawsuit that would seek compensation for those losses.
