Louisiana student dies in hit-and-run

On Behalf of | Jul 19, 2014 | Hit-and-Run Accidents |

Being involved in an accident is hard enough, but what if the responsible party flees the scene? Not only does this leave you with limited means of identifying them, making compensation claims difficult, but if there are no witnesses to the accident, you risk being left unattended until someone finds you.

In Louisiana, police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a man suspected of involvement in a recent hit-and-run accident. The 35-year-old man stands accused of rear-ending a motorized scooter being ridden by a student of Louisiana State University. The student, a 20-year-old man, died in the incident.

Although the driver escaped the scene, a burned out vehicle was found later that day. Police believe it to have been the vehicle identified as being involved in the crash that had occurred only hours before. If the suspect is apprehended, he will face charges of reckless operation, driving under suspension, hit-and-run and obstruction of justice.

It is easy to understand that someone who believes they have caused an accident, particularly a fatal one, might panic. Even so, fleeing the scene is irresponsible, not simply because it is an evasion of justice, but because the victims of the crash may require immediate medical attention.

If you have been involved in a hit-and-run accident, you may be wondering what to do next. An attorney can support you through this difficult period and may be able to assist you as you pursue justice and remuneration for your injuries. He or she can negotiate on your behalf and may be able to secure a settlement or insurance payout to help cover the costs incurred as a result of your injuries.
