Wrong-way driver near border raises questions

On Behalf of | Dec 28, 2015 | Car Accidents |

A car accident near the border of the United States and Mexico may have received coverage in Louisiana media. The accident occurred because a car driving southbound near the border crossing in San Ysidro turned around and drove back up highway at extremely high speeds, where it eventually ended up in a fatal collision.

The car crash happened at about 3 a.m. on Dec. 20. A Mercedes approached the border crossing on Interstate 5 along with traffic, but for reasons unknown the driver made a sudden U-turn and began to drive north on the southbound side of the highway. Border patrol agents attempted to chase the vehicle, but they had to give up the pursuit as the Mercedes sped away at speeds estimated in excess of 100 mph.

The Mercedes continued on the wrong side of the road. About 40 miles north of the border it ran into a Chrysler head on. Both vehicles caught fire in the accident, and the driver of the Mercedes and the two occupants of the Chrysler were killed.

The surviving family members of a person who has been killed in a motor vehicle accident that was caused by the negligence of another driver will often have to face severe financial circumstances at the same time that they are dealing with the grief of suddenly losing a loved one. In addition to funeral and burial expenses, they may have to deal with the loss in household income that the decedent had provided. People in this type of situation may want to meet with a personal injury attorney to discuss the advisability of filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault motorist, or his or her estate in the event that the driver died as well, seeking all applicable damages.
