When a person is killed in a motor vehicle accident, the surviving family members may be faced with significant financial burdens in addition to the grief and the loss of companionship resulting from the sudden death of a loved one. In addition to funeral and burial expenses, they may have to deal with the loss of income that the decedent contributed to the household.

In the event of an accident that was found to have been caused by an impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent motorist, the survivors may want to meet with a personal injury attorney to discuss the advisability of filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver. If the driver was also killed in the accident, his or her estate could be named as the defendant in the proceeding.
