Louisiana residents may have heard that Ann Day, the younger sister of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, was killed in a car crash in Arizona on May 7. The accident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m.
A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that Day, age 77, was traveling east on Ina Road near Tucson when a westbound car crossed the median and struck her vehicle head-on. A truck driving behind Day then smashed into the back of her vehicle. Day suffered critical injuries in the accident and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The driver of the car that hit Day head-on, identified as a 23-year-old male, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The driver of the truck, an unidentified male, was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Day served as an Arizona Republican state senator for 10 years and was a Pima County supervisor for 12 years. A political moderate, she fought to give cancer patients the right to access clinical trials and pushed for HMO reforms.
After a car crash, police investigate the accident site to determine the cause of the collision. If an impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent driver is found to have been the cause, then injured victims or the surviving family members of a person who was killed in the crash may want to meet with an attorney to determine the best way to seek compensation from the at-fault party for the losses that they have incurred as a result of the accident.
