Alcohol and speeding suspected in fatal Louisiana crash

The Louisiana State Police has reported that a 33-year-old man who caused a fatal wrong-way crash in Webster Parish on June 21 may have been speeding and under the influence of alcohol at the time. An LSP report indicates that samples have been collected from the man and will be tested for traces of drugs and alcohol. The crash, which is still being investigated, occurred on U.S. Route 80 near Minden at approximately 2:45 p.m.

According to reports, the man was traveling eastbound on U.S. Route 80 in a Chevrolet HHR crossover when he attempted to pass slower moving traffic in the vicinity of Middle Road. A police report indicates that the area is designated as a no-passing zone. While attempting to complete the illegal maneuver, the man’s Chevrolet struck an oncoming Dodge pickup truck head-on.

Police say that the drivers of both vehicles escaped the crash with what were described as moderate injuries because they had both been secured by seat belts, but a 66-year-old woman who was a passenger in the pickup truck was not restrained and suffered critical injuries. The woman succumbed to her injuries while being transported to a medical facility in Minden.

The surviving family members of a person who has been killed in a motor vehicle accident caused by an impaired driver may want to meet with an attorney to see if filing a wrongful death lawsuit would be an advisable way to seek compensation for their losses. Such a lawsuit can be successful even if no criminal charges are lodged against the at-fault motorist.
